Govies Make an Impact in the 2014 Autodesk Excellence in Infrastructure Awards

We here all the time about our nation’s infrastructure crisis, isn't it about time we heard some positive news!

Well, thanks to the Autodesk Excellence in Infrastructure 2014 awards, infrastructure planners and engineers are getting the recognition they deserve! This was your chance to submit examples of how your agency has transformed its workflows, introduce sustainability into the design process, improved collaboration or communicated with compelling 3D visualizations. Submissions closed in July and winners were announced earlier this month.

The winners overcame some unique challenges:

1st Place: Huettenwerk Krupp-Mannesmann (HKM) – “One Digital Factory” project, Duisburg, Germany.

“One Digital Factory” is a five year project that saw the creation of a 3D model of a steel factory and the surrounding factory within Autodesk Infraworks. The model helped address the challenges of managing interdisciplinary work across more than 20 departments – reducing redundancy and contradictory 2D and 3D data (they were dealing with over half a million 2D drawings)!

2nd Place: Loudoun Water, VA and Dewberry – Potomac Water Supply Program

One of the fastest growing counties in the U.S., Loudoun County, Virginia, had the unique challenge of communicating a complex, multidisciplinary, and mostly underground project – the Potomac Water Supply Program – to multiple audiences in a clear and engaging way. Working with contractor, Dewberry, the team used Autodesk design and visualization tools to assist in the development of a community outreach video to show design intent and how the program protects the river using an innovative water banking system

3rd Place: Huitt-Zollars and Orange County Public Works - La Pata Gap Closure, Orange County, California, USA.

Who hasn’t worked on a design project that required project changes even after the final design is underway and environmental clearance has been given? Faced with such a costly challenge, Orange County Public Works used AutoCAD Civil 3D to reduce the costs involved and Autodesk InfraWorks to communicate with stakeholders during the construction of the project.

"I was impressed with Huitt-Zollars’ ability to quickly study numerous concepts and report on quantities and estimated costs.  That really helped us in reaching equitable solutions with our project stakeholders," says Harry Persaud, Orange County.
