Department of Defense

The United States Department of Defense is the U.S. federal department charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces. By following the Nation Security Strategy (NSS) and National Defense Strategy (NDS), the department’s mission focus is to protect and defend the U.S. from foreign threats while ensuring its security institutions are current and capable at facing the challenges of today.

In addition to those requirements, the Department of Defense is also challenged with the need to reduce legacy applications and improve network operations while employing greener policies. The benefits of instituting these changes are far more than reduced costs. The end users, the actual war fighters, will have improved access to critical information and will be better able to do their job.

The Department of Defense through its many departments and agencies allots its resources to ongoing conflicts, evaluates risk and constantly looks towards the future.  With global needs, technology must remain current and be frequently evaluated for security, usage and need.

DLT can help your agency comply with critical IT policies and regulations with the following Department of Defense initiatives:

Directive 8570

The DoD Directive 8570.1 is a formalized training and certification policy for all personnel and contractors with access to DoD information systems. It specifies that all Information Assurance (IA) personnel are trained and certified according to their job functions. All IA work forces in the technical category (IAT) must obtain IA certification and certification for the operating system(s) they support.

Enterprise Software Initiative
Enterprise Software Initiative

The Enterprise Software Initiative (ESI) is a Department of Defense initiative to streamline the acquisition process and provide best-priced, standards-compliant information technology (IT). The ESI is a business discipline used to coordinate multiple IT investments and leverage the buying power of the government for commercial IT products and services.

By consolidating IT requirements and negotiating Enterprise Agreements with software vendors, the Department of Defense realizes significant Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) savings in IT acquisition and maintenance. The goal is to develop and implement a process to identify, acquire, distribute and manage IT from the enterprise level.

Enterprise Service Orientation Architecture

Many agencies are now required to update their legacy systems in order to be more efficient, transparent and better able to facilitate communication between agencies.  By implementing a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) design when deploying new systems, agencies will be able to reduce costs and increase efficiency both internally and with external users.

The primary implementation of a SOA network system requires overall coordination and structure of your services and how they combine to work together. Allowing applications and network functions to be more flexible and work with one another helps increase productivity when using information across multiple application data platforms.

Network and Information Intergration (NII) Cybersecurtiy.
Network and Information Integration (NII) Cybersecurity

With the increase and adoption of new technologies, the threat of cyber attacks and loss of sensitive information are multiplied exponentially.  Agencies’ compliance with initiatives like the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) is critical.  Cybersecurity ensures that IT systems are safe and reliable while protecting our nation’s information assets from internal and external threats.

The Global Information Grid

Virtualization helps agencies reduce their footprint, be greener, and provide a standard architecture for people to engage each other and find the information they need.  Working with globally available, secure information allows the department and its agencies to be more efficient when at offsite locations worldwide.
