Why NetBackup Appliance?

Data protection architectures are by necessity complex in nature as they involve the cold calculus of many factors.  There is not a “one size fits all” approach to data protection because the operational requirements of each organization dictates how data is used and the local risk assessment process dictates to some extent how it will be protected. Part of the data protection strategy is the backup / restore process.  The simplest of these architectures involve a management tier, a process tier and either a storage tier (disk, tape or both).   Symantec’s answer to this is the Netbackup Appliance; a 4U 32TB raid 6 stack that includes all three layers in an appliance form factor.   It comes with 2 1GigE ports, 2 10 GigE ports and 2 4Gig fiber hbas.  It also has a direct out to tape capability for off-site backup replication. Symantec’s de-duplicate anywhere capability is an integral part of this appliance which extends the scope of data protection significantly. So what would make this appliance a compelling option for a prospective customer?
  • Price:  Consider the value of not having to worry about the different pieces of hardware and Oss and storage management processes that makeup a typical backup solution.  Organizations that have a unitary mission profile and compliance environment can find this compelling enough.
  • Simplicity: Even if you have a fairly complex organizational structure, if your data is distributed into autonomous regions that have different data protection requirements then this appliance approach can simplify your backup architecture by being more easily implemented.
  • Standardization: Having a modular design to your backup environment that can be duplicated across your organization reduces cost of IT operations and allows the security team to have a consistent model to plan for. Considering the cost of certifying new systems this alone could justify the decision to adopt this strategy.
Of course everything is not cut and dried.  The struggle between engineered systems and appliance based systems in no more new than building tract housing vs. custom “stick” housing.  Obviously if you build a custom solution you can address issues like standardizing your hardware and operating systems at a larger scope than just data protection.
  • Data centers rely on standardization at a very high level to attain the cost points that make operations possible so having appliances for every subset of their infrastructure probably won’t be attractive.
  • Large organizations that outsource different parts of their IT infrastructure will have a hard time reconciling their contracts to accommodate a different model.
  • Complex data protection schemes that involve data classification and Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) will find this architecture to be cumbersome to implement.
The bottom line is “look before you leap”.  It is always good to have options and the Symantec Netbackup Appliance is a good option to have.  It is still important to consider what a customer has currently, what their overall goals  are and how much flexibility they have in evolving their architecture to take advantage of the myriad of technologies on offer. DLT Solutions provides technical people at all levels of the IT architecture to help customers determine their optimum choices among in-house, outsourced or cloud implementations.
