TomTom Brings Navigation and Mapping Data to the Public Sector

Say the phrase “TomTom” and what’s most likely to come to mind is a company that manufacturers consumer automobile navigation systems. In fact, TomTom is the leading manufacturer of consumer navigation systems in Europe. But did you know that TomTom also provides navigation systems, mapping data and handheld navigations devices to Federal, State and Local governments, too? TomTom’s government product solution line was the subject of a recent webcast, TomTom Maps and Applications for Government GIS, hosted by TomTom and our sponsor DLT Solutions. The discussion was led by James Pardue, Manager of Government Programs. The webcast makes a strong case as to why an agency like the Department of Homeland Security or an agency like FEMA should outfit their transportation fleet with TomTom in-car navigation. In emergency response, for instance, TomTom navigation can help FEMA allocate resources accordingly based on historical traffic data and path logistics of the road. They also provide real-time data. On a more local level, State Governments can use TomTom’s data set and analytical tools for custom area analysis. For city planners trying to lighten commute times, they can look at historical travel times and speeds, and travel times at varying times of day over a broad network of roads. By making transportation data affordable and accessible to geospatial communities, TomTom is changing the way agencies are exploring and experiencing our world. They’ve taken the best in commercial navigation and combined it with the data content to provide their geospatial platform.
