Thoughts on Symantec NetBackup 7.0

With the release of Netbackup 7.0 scheduled for the first quarter of 2010, I wanted to give you my take on the substantive features. There are three:
  1. Expanded protection and recovery for virtualization NetBackup 7.0 is going to reduce the hardware requirements for VMware by eliminating the need for a Proxy Server for off-host backups. Many of the customers I have worked with in the last 18 months expressed concerns about the extra hardware needed. Microsoft Hyper-V should also be easier to work with. 7.0 is supposed to reduce the application impact from backups by improving the off-host backup capability.
  2. Deduplication Some of the customer sites I have visited have been reluctant to embrace dedupe, again because of the expense associated with adding an appliance or a separate server to control dedupe storage. 7.0 should allow for Client or Media Server dedupe without the need for a separate server.
  3. Better analytics NetBackup Operations Center (NOM) was OK, but lacked some of the features of more robust competitors. With 7.0 Symantec is introducing an OpsCenter concept. You will be able to monitor, alert and report from one console. If you are using other Symantec products you will be able to integrate PureDisk and Enterprise Vault reporting with the OpsCenter.
We have tested most of this functionality in the lab, but the real proof will come when customers deploy into production environments. If you need help, onsite or remote, let us know.
