The Oil Slick, Natural Disasters and Importance of Portable Satellite Imagery

Natural disasters and industrial incidents are not in short supply these days.  Both newspapers and the evening news are documenting tornados, volcanic ash, oil slicks and more. The image below, from GeoEye, shows the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico taken from their GeoEye-1 satellite. oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico taken from their GeoEye-1 satelliteThe images provide more than just an interesting picture. High quality imagery allows first responders to better prepare and coordinate response activities, whether it is tracking the tides to determine where the oil will first contact land or where to deploy collection/retention crews. But what happens if you need the imagery and can’t connect to a network, or you don’t have the resources to acquire/fuse the imagery?  Google and IceWeb have developed solutions that address these situations with Google Portable and IceWeb’s Enterprise Visualization Appliance. When data is needed in the field via laptop, Google Portable provides users access to mapping data, imagery and/or vector data through the Google Earth Enterprise platform on either a USB drive or disk. When agencies have access to their network but don’t have the time or resources to fuse data or manage servers, IceWeb’s Enterprise Visualization Appliance could be the answer. Specify your area of interest, and IceWeb’s team will load Google Earth Enterprise, fuse the data and deliver an appliance that is ready to be racked.  Very cool indeed…
