The Value of Geospatial Technology

I was reading the latest issue of On The FrontLines entitled, “Geospatial Trends in Government”, and it got me thinking just how ingrained and valuable geospatial technology is in our everyday lives. From our cell phones ability to pinpoint our exact location to being able to reduce and solve crime, geospatial information has a hand in nearly everything we do. The entire magazine is dedicated to how geospatial technology is being used in the Public Sector. Solutions provided by Google, Autodesk and GeoEye allow users to access geospatial data and then put it into programs that you or I can use. For instance, Google Earth Enterprise has allowed the state of Alabama to aggregate all of its geospatial data into one interface for users to access and utilize the information. Until reading the magazine, my knowledge of the technology was limited to its usefulness in determining a location. I never knew how expansive its range of uses is and can grow to be. After reading the articles, it’s clear to me that geospatial technology is changing and improving the way we live. I think that the full potential of what this technology can do has yet to be seen, but we are definitely going to see it sooner than later. But don’t take my word for it, check out the “Geospatial Trends in Government” issue of On The FrontLines for yourself.
