Up, up and away! View Any Journey in a Virtual Helicopter via Google Maps

Google has now added a 3D bird's-eye view to its mapping service!  Government agencies are using this new feature, which enables users to experience the feeling of being in a helicopter when viewing the path they’re traveling. Check out Google’s helicopter view of the Statue of Liberty (above) (Up, up and away! Now Google allows you to view a route in a virtual helicopter) How does it work?  Here are some simple steps so you’re not lost on your helicopter ride:
  1. You will need the Google Earth plug-in for the function to work.  The 3D button is located next to 'driving directions' in the left hand bar.  Click the 'Earth' mapping option.  This shows up when you hover over 'Map' in the upper right hand corner.  You will be prompted to download the plug-in.
  2. Click on the '3D' play button.  The map will switch to Earth view and automatically start flying you on your requested path.
  3. At any time during your journey, you can get back to 2D mode by clicking on the '2D' button in the left panel.
