Technology modernization efforts have been a priority for federal agencies for years, with government leaders, staff, vendors and contractors all exploring ways to update aging network infrastructure. While initiatives like Cloud First and Cloud Smart put greater emphasis on this digital transformation, questions remain on how to effectively execute a large-scale modernization effort.
However, as indicated by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) there is a cloud-focused initiative roadmap other agencies can follow. The VA is the second largest federal agency, with 56 regional offices, 400,000 federal employees, and over 20 million veterans supported, it is the equivalent a Fortune 10 company. In addition, it is also the largest healthcare organization in the United States. In their modernization efforts, they are moving over 350 applications from on-prem to the cloud. To gain an understanding of what a successful modernization initiative could look like, federal agencies should consider following the successful road paved by the VA, which can be emulated by other government organizations, regardless of size.
