NetBackup 7: Simplifying your VMware ESX Backups
Please welcome NetBackup version 7 to the Symantec NetBackup family of products! One of the feature enhancements in this version that I am really excited about is the VMware ESX backup utilizing the vStorage API. Prior to NetBackup 7, it was required to setup and configure a VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) proxy server to backup VMware guests with NetBackup. This required you to potentially add additional hardware, an additional operating system license, and another device/layer to troubleshoot when things are
IT Services Delivery – "From the Ground to the Cloud" Part 3

Using LDOM’s to Create Virtual Machines
My interest in virtualization started many years ago, and I have played with Xen, Zones, VmWare, etc. VmWare is without question the 800 LB gorilla in this space. They have many, many great features that come at a price. Sun XVM is a solution that is not quite as mature but comes at a cheaper price and Virtualbox is free and competes with VmWare Player.
Sun now has a product line ready for cloud computing:
- CMT Systems
- Intel/AMD Systems
The 800-Pound Gorilla in the room named Oracle
Change has been the one constant for Oracle over the past five years. Since 2005, Oracle has acquired over 60 companies that have added both new solutions and technical expertise to what was already considered to be one of the premier software development shops on the planet. Some you’d heard of, like Peoplesoft, Siebel and BEA, others were less well known, but each brought new capabilities to the Oracle “stack” and h
You just got a huge RFP, now what?
Let’s face it- when a 113 page RFP hits your desk with a response deadline of 6 business days out and counting, the task at hand seems arduous at best. Even with the assistance of extended team members (at the vendor and internally within DLT), the level of effort needed to submit a compliant response is daunting and forces us to truly raise the bar on our attention to detail.
Open Source Adoption in the Public Sector
Open Source Software (OSS) is gaining more and more recognition in both private and public sector as a true enterprise alternative. Often thought of in the past as just a rogue technology developed by a bunch of coders with nothing better to do than fight the “monopoly” of Microsoft, it is now being legitimized and brought into the mainstream. This is even true in the public sector, both federal and state & local which is considered by some historically to be the laggard market when it comes to technology.
More and more government agencies are formally acknowledging OSS as a
The Darwinian Challenge of Cybersecurity
The adaptive nature of threats to information security has proven to be one of the greatest challenges to personal, business, and government adoption of computing in general, and communication of digital information over the public Internet, in particular.
Today we are not only concerned with theft of private or sensitive information created and stored on ubiquitous personal computing and communications devices, we also have to be concerned with the security of our information while it is in transit and when it is in storage at its destination.
Another Barrier to Entry – Government Marketing
I was talking to a regional marketing manager a few months ago who asked my advice about a marketing initiative her company was about to pursue. Basically, she was told by the Marketing VP at HQ to execute a “one-off” program to generate 1,000 public sector leads for a new case management and collaboration product they had which was showing early success in the commercial SMB market. The VP calculated that with 1,000 leads, they could generate enough qualified prospects, quotes, and wins to grow revenue for the next quarter.
What is e-discovery, and how does it affect my data management environments?
By now most IT managers have heard the buzz around “e-discovery”. Depending on who is asking about it or requesting it, what they expect could be vastly different from what you plan on implementing. With my experience of implementing and supporting e-discovery solutions, I hope to clear up some of the confusion around e-discovery’s nomenclature and shed some light on some e-discovery solutions that provide the most bang for their buck.
First off, let’s define e-discovery.
The rising popularity of GeoEye and satellite imagery
As a government VAR in the AEC space, we are afforded a unique viewpoint. The flow of Federal Business Opportunity (FBO) data for AEC projects is astronomical – with dozens of projects being released each week.
