NetBackup 7: Simplifying your VMware ESX Backups

Please welcome NetBackup version 7 to the Symantec NetBackup family of products!  One of the feature enhancements in this version that I am really excited about is the VMware ESX backup utilizing the vStorage API.  Prior to NetBackup 7, it was required to setup and configure a VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) proxy server to backup VMware guests with NetBackup.  This required you to potentially add additional hardware, an additional operating system license, and another device/layer to troubleshoot when things aren’t going quite right with your backups…. How fun is that?? If you are unfamiliar with VCB configuration it looks something like below.

The minimum requirements to use the vStorage API method are ESX 3.5 and Virtual Center 2.5.  It is important note that earlier versions of ESX can be backed up with the vStorage API as long as they sit behind a Virtual Center 2.5 box.  I recommend you consult your support provider for NetBackup for additional details if you are running any earlier versions than ESX 3.5.  If you are a DLT Service Center customer you can give us a call (888) 358-7658 or email us at support@www.dlt.com for additional details. In addition to VMware enhancements, NetBackup 7 comes stuffed with some other features like:
  • Hyper-V
  • Deduplication
  • OpsCenter
  • EV 8.x Agent
  • Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Support
