Mapping Earthquake Activity in Central Virginia

Last year’s east coast earthquake was a first for many – including myself. Many are questioning whether or not the eastern seaboard will continue to experience earthquakes in the near future.

Associate Coordinator of USGS hazards program, Dr. Michael Blanpied joined Fox 5 News to explain the predictability of earthquakes “We don’t see that earthquakes, anywhere… really act in a predictable pattern.”

But what about the possibility of experiencing another earthquake in the Washington, DC Metro area?

“Other than the aftershocks in central Virginia, really not…now there always is a possibility that our area will experience a larger earthquake that has happened in the past,” said Dr Blanpied

The USGS plan to monitor earthquakes by using mapping techniques. This will help plot and map out underground volts in Virginia. Using airborne surveying in central VA to map out magnetic signatures and the gravity of rocks, the signals – when measured – will allow the USGS to find patterns to see if they pose a bigger hazard.
