Designing to Make an Impact – the Autodesk University 2010 Blog Series

Autodesk University 2010 kicked off Tuesday morning with its Welcome Address. Autodesk CEO Carl Bass began with a challenge to all users. He wanted to get the message across to not just design, but design to make an “impact”. Bass proceeded to bring several users to the stage to show how their design work is already fulfilling the challenge of making an impact. The users in question ranged from a high school shop teacher to an astrophysicist to a Disney producer to a Washington DOT Engineer. However, the one user that had the most powerful message was the Senior Design Executive of Tesla Motors, Franz von Holzhausen, who entered the stage driving company’s new Model S electric car. With the goal of creating an  a more energy-efficient world, Tesla Motors’ used Autodesk design software to create the Model S car, a zero gasoline and zero emissions vehicle. With global oil supplies set to deplete by 2052 (assuming the current usage rate), Tesla could be on to a winner! Electric cars are all well and good, but what does all this mean for the public sector? Well the use of alternative fuels and a reduction on oil-dependency are also key goals for government agencies.  From electric-powered fleet vehicles to the direct use of design software to streamline ship or missile building projects, the benefits of design-build innovation are limitless. - Michael Palatiello, DLT Solutions
